Product Guide

# The Best Products for Color-Treated Hair

Color lasts about as long as your home routine allows. I can place the most beautiful balayage in Rochester, but if it gets washed in hot water with a clarifying shampoo three times a week, it will look dull within a month. Here's the routine I actually recommend to clients, plain-language, no brand loyalty required.

## Start with a sulfate-free shampoo

Sulfates are aggressive detergents. They clean beautifully, which is exactly the problem, they strip the color molecules sitting in the cortex along with the oil. A sulfate-free formula cleans more gently, so toner and tone-on-tone deposits hang on much longer.

Look for "sulfate-free" and "color-safe" on the bottle, and check the first five ingredients for sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. Wash two or three times a week rather than daily, and use lukewarm water, hot water swells the cuticle and lets pigment escape.

- Sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo, 2-3 washes per week
- Lukewarm water for washing, cool rinse to close the cuticle
- Dry shampoo on off days rather than an extra wash

## Use purple or blue toning shampoo, sparingly

Blonde and lightened hair pulls warm as it oxidizes; that's brass. A purple shampoo neutralizes yellow, and a blue shampoo neutralizes the orange that shows up in lightened brunettes. Both work, and both are easy to overdo.

Once a week is usually plenty. Leave it on two to three minutes, not fifteen. Overusing violet pigment leaves blonde looking flat, grey, and slightly muddy, a look I spend a lot of appointments correcting.

## Bond builders are worth the money

Lightening breaks disulfide bonds inside the hair. Bond-building treatments rebuild them, which is why hair that gets regular bond treatments holds up to repeat highlighting far better than hair that doesn't.

Use one as a weekly treatment on damp hair before conditioner. If you're lifting more than two levels, or you're a long-time blonde, this is the single most valuable product in your cabinet.

## Heat protectant, every single time

A flat iron runs hotter than the temperature at which keratin begins to break down. Heat protectant puts a buffer between the plate and the cuticle, and it also reduces the color fade that comes from repeated thermal styling.

Keep hot tools at or below 350°F on colored hair, and make one pass instead of five. Most of the damage I see isn't from the tool, it's from going over the same section repeatedly because the hair was still damp.

## How to pick a conditioner that actually protects color

Conditioner does two different jobs and most people only buy for one of them. A daily rinse-out conditioner smooths the cuticle so light reflects evenly, which is what makes color look expensive. A weekly mask adds moisture back into hair that lightening has made porous, and porous hair is exactly what loses toner first.

Read the label for cationic conditioning agents such as behentrimonium methosulfate or cetrimonium chloride near the top of the list, then look for a fatty alcohol like cetyl or stearyl alcohol. Skip anything with a heavy sulfate cleanser paired in, and be careful with protein: strong protein conditioners used daily on fine colored hair make it stiff and brittle rather than strong.

- Daily: lightweight rinse-out conditioner, mid-lengths to ends only
- Weekly: moisture mask on damp hair, 5-10 minutes
- Every 2-4 weeks: protein or bond treatment, not both in the same wash
- Leave-in with UV filters through summer

## A realistic weekly routine for color-treated hair

Clients ask for a routine more than they ask for a product list, so here is the one I give out. It assumes two to three washes a week, which is where most colored hair holds up best.

Wash day one: sulfate-free shampoo, rinse-out conditioner, leave-in, heat protectant before drying. Wash day two: same, but swap the conditioner for a moisture mask. Once a week on a wash day, add a bond builder before conditioner. Once a week if you are blonde, swap in toning shampoo for two to three minutes. Off days: dry shampoo at the root and nothing else.

- 2-3 washes per week, lukewarm water, cool rinse
- One bond treatment weekly, one mask weekly
- Toning shampoo once weekly for blondes, never daily
- Heat protectant on every single hot-tool pass

## Hard water is the hidden problem in Monroe County

A lot of the fading I see in Rochester, Greece and the western suburbs is not a product problem at all, it is mineral buildup. Calcium and iron deposit on the cuticle, dull the tone, and give blonde a dingy orange cast within weeks of a perfect toner.

A $30 shower filter fixes more color complaints than any shampoo upgrade. If a filter is not an option, a chelating treatment once a month lifts the minerals off, and it should be followed immediately by a mask because chelators are drying by design.

## What to skip

A few common products quietly undo color work. Clarifying and "detox" shampoos strip toner in one wash. Anti-dandruff shampoos with high-strength active ingredients will lift color faster than almost anything else on the shelf. And hard-water buildup, very common in parts of Monroe County, leaves blonde looking dingy and orange even when the color itself is fine.

If your blonde turns brassy within weeks no matter what you do, a shower filter is often the actual fix.

- Clarifying or detox shampoo more than once a month
- Chlorine exposure without wetting and conditioning hair first
- Box color between salon visits, it makes correction far harder

## Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after coloring can I wash my hair?

Wait 48 to 72 hours. The cuticle needs that time to fully close and lock in the pigment. Washing the next morning is the single most common reason fresh toner disappears.

Does purple shampoo work on brunettes?

Purple neutralizes yellow, which is mostly a blonde problem. Lightened brunettes usually pull orange, so a blue-pigmented shampoo is the better match.

Are salon products actually better than drugstore ones?

Sometimes, but the label matters more than the price. A sulfate-free drugstore shampoo will treat your color better than an expensive salon one containing sulfates. Read the ingredients, not the shelf position.

What is the best routine for color-treated hair?

Two to three washes a week with a sulfate-free shampoo, a rinse-out conditioner every wash, a moisture mask weekly, a bond builder weekly, heat protectant on every hot-tool pass, and toning shampoo once a week if you are blonde.

Which products protect color best in the summer?

A leave-in with UV filters, plus wetting your hair with clean water before swimming so it absorbs less chlorine or lake water. Sun and chlorine oxidize color faster than any shampoo strips it.

How often should I use a bond-building treatment?

Once a week for most color clients, and twice a week for long-term blondes or anyone lifting several levels. More than that isn't harmful, but you stop seeing extra benefit.
