Service Guide

# Hair Color Correction in Rochester, NY

Color correction is the service people arrive at after something has already gone wrong: a box dye that went black, highlights that came out orange, or six years of overlapping color that now sits in visible stripes. It is the most technical thing that happens in a salon chair, and the honest version of it takes more than one appointment. Here is what to expect before you book.

## The four problems correction actually solves

Almost every correction falls into one of four categories, and each needs a different approach.

Banding is horizontal stripes of different tones caused by overlapping color applications over time. Brass is warm orange or yellow exposed by lightening. Over-darkening is box dye or a salon color that went several levels too deep, and it is the hardest to reverse because dark artificial pigment is stubborn and sits deep. Uneven lift is patchy lightening, usually from an at-home kit applied unevenly or from a lightener that processed inconsistently.

- Banding: overlapping applications, horizontal stripes
- Brass: exposed warm undertone after lightening
- Over-darkening: box dye or salon color several levels too deep
- Uneven lift: patchy or blotchy lightening

## Why box dye is the hardest thing to fix

Box color is formulated to work on every hair type without a stylist present, which means it is deliberately aggressive and deposits more pigment than a salon formula. Many dark box shades also contain metallic salts, which react unpredictably with professional lightener, sometimes with heat and breakage.

That is why the first step on box-dyed hair is always a strand test, not a full application. The test tells Michelle how the hair will actually behave before anything is committed to the whole head. It costs one small section and it prevents the outcome nobody wants.

## It is almost never one appointment

Removing artificial pigment and rebuilding tone is a staged process. A typical correction runs two to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, with the gap deliberately built in so the hair can recover between services.

Session one usually removes or lifts the unwanted pigment and lands on a neutral, even base, which is frequently not the finished color. Session two shapes the actual tone and adds dimension. Later sessions refine. Anyone promising a single-appointment fix on a serious correction is prioritizing the booking over your hair.

- Two to four sessions is typical
- Four to six weeks between sessions
- Session one lands on a neutral base, not the final color
- The full plan is mapped and priced at consultation

## How correction is priced

Correction is quoted by time, not by a flat service price, because no two corrections take the same number of hours. A brass fix might be a single toning session. Reversing black box dye across long, dense hair can run eight or more hours across multiple visits.

The consultation is free and it is where the real number comes from. Michelle looks at the hair, runs a strand test where needed, and gives you a session-by-session plan with a cost for each before anything begins. No correction starts without that conversation.

## What to do before your consultation

Bring the history. Every product used, every date you can remember, every box, including the ones from home. Stylists are not there to judge; they need it because the products already in the hair dictate what can safely be used next.

Bring reference photos of what you want, and photos of what you do not want, which are often more useful. Do not apply anything new in the meantime, and specifically do not try another box to cover the problem. Each additional layer adds a session to the correction.

- Full color history, including at-home products and dates
- Reference photos of the goal and of what to avoid
- No new color between now and the appointment
- Come with time available; corrections run long

## Protecting the result

Corrected hair has been through more than ordinary colored hair, so the aftercare is non-negotiable. Sulfate-free shampoo, a weekly bond treatment, a weekly moisture mask on alternating days, and heat kept at or below 350 degrees.

Book the follow-up gloss at six to eight weeks. Correction tone fades faster than virgin color because it is sitting on more porous hair, and a short gloss appointment holds the result far more cheaply than letting it drift and correcting again.

## Frequently Asked Questions

How much does color correction cost in Rochester NY?

Correction is priced by time rather than as a flat service, because the hours vary enormously. Michelle gives a session-by-session plan with a cost for each at the free consultation, after seeing the hair and running a strand test where needed.

Can you fix box dye in one appointment?

Rarely. Most box-dye corrections take two to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Forcing it into one appointment is how hair breaks.

Can black box dye be lifted to blonde?

Usually yes, but over multiple sessions, and only after a strand test confirms how the hair responds. Some dark box shades contain metallic salts that react badly with lightener, which the strand test reveals before any risk is taken.

What causes banding in colored hair?

Overlapping color applications. Each time color is pulled through hair that already has color, that section gets darker or warmer than the rest, and over time those overlaps show as horizontal stripes.

Should I try to fix brassy hair at home first?

A purple or blue shampoo once a week is fine and may be all you need for mild brass. Do not apply another box color or an at-home lightener over it. Every extra layer makes the professional correction longer and more expensive.

## Need a correction sorted out?

Bring your color history and reference photos to a free consultation. Michelle will tell you honestly what it will take, how many sessions, and what each one costs before anything starts.
