From sun-drenched afternoons at Ontario Beach Park to crisp, snowy walks through Highland Park, our environment is constantly changing. However, these drastic shifts in weather can take a serious toll on your tresses. As a stylist here in Rochester, I often see clients struggling with frizz in July and brittle breakage in January. The truth is, your hair needs a completely different strategy depending on the thermometer. Here is my professional guide to transitioning your hair care routine through the seasons. ## Summer: Shielding from Sun, Salt, and Humidity When the Rochester humidity hits, our hair often reacts by expanding into a frizzy halo. Add in UV rays and chlorine from summer pool parties, and you have a recipe for damage. **1\. Hydration is Your Best Friend** Humidity happens because dry hair is reaching out into the air to grab moisture. The Pre-Swim Rinse** Before jumping into a pool, soak your hair with fresh tap water. Your hair is like a sponge; if it’s already saturated with clean water, it will absorb significantly less chlorine or salt water. ## Winter: Combatting Dry Air and Static Shock Once the Rochester slush arrives and we crank up the indoor heating, the moisture evaporates from our hair. Winter hair care is all about preservation and soothing the scalp. **1\. Wash Less, Condition More** In the winter, your scalp's natural oils are your greatest asset. Try to extend the time between washes to avoid stripping away those protective oils. When you do wash, use lukewarm water rather than steaming hot, as high heat further dehydrates the hair. **2\. Incorporate a scalp serum or a gentle exfoliating treatment once a month to remove dry skin buildup and promote healthy hair growth. ## The Year-Round Essential: Regular Trims Regardless of the season, the best way to keep your hair looking its best in Rochester is through consistency.
