While this is such an exciting time for Rochester families, many new moms are caught off guard by a common postpartum surprise: significant hair shedding. I’m Michelle Doyle, and I’ve sat with countless women in my Rochester chair who feel overwhelmed when they see extra hair in the shower drain a few months after giving birth. I want you to know first and foremost: **It is completely normal, and it is temporary.** ## Why Does Postpartum Hair Loss Happen? During pregnancy, your body experiences a surge in estrogen. This hormone keeps your hair in the "growth phase" (anagen) longer than usual, which is why many pregnant women enjoy the thickest, shiniest hair of their lives. Once you deliver and your hormones begin to recalibrate, that backlog of hair suddenly enters the "resting phase" (telogen) and begins to fall out all at once. This usually peaks around the three-to-four-month mark. While it can feel alarming, you aren't actually losing your hair permanently, you’re simply losing the hair you \*would\* have shed over the last nine months. ## Tips for Managing the Shedding Phase While we can’t stop the hormonal shift, we can manage the hair you have and protect the new growth coming in. Here is how I recommend my clients handle the transition: ### 1\. Be Gentle with Your Mane When hair is thinning, it’s more prone to breakage. Avoid tight high-ponytails or "mom buns" that pull on the hairline. Instead, use silk scrunchies or claw clips. If you’re heading out for a stroll at Highland Park, try a loose braid to keep hair back without the tension. ### 2\. Focus on Scalp Health Healthy hair starts at the root. I always suggest my clients use a massager while shampooing to stimulate blood flow to the scalp. Look for lightweight, sulfate-free shampoos that won't weigh down the hair you have, giving you more natural volume. ### 3\. Nutrition Matters Even though you’re busy with the baby, try to prioritize your nutrition. Continuing your prenatal vitamin (after consulting with your doctor) can provide the iron, biotin, and zinc necessary to support transition during the regrowth phase. ## Styling Secrets for Postpartum Regrowth Eventually, you’ll notice those tiny, wispy "baby hairs" along your hairline. While they are a great sign that your hair is returning, they can be tricky to style. Here’s how I help my clients bridge the gap: - **The Power of the Part:** If you usually wear a middle part, try a deep side part to add instant volume and hide areas where the hair might look thinner. - **The "Postpartum Chop":** Many Rochester moms find that this is the perfect time for a fresh cut. Shorter styles, like a textured lob or a chic bob, make hair look significantly thicker and take the weight off the roots. Plus, it’s much harder for a baby to grab and pull shorter hair! - **Strategic Face-Framing:** I love adding soft, face-framing layers or "curtain bangs" for my clients. These can elegantly blend those new, short regrowth hairs into your style so they look intentional rather than out of place. ## When to See a Professional Most women see their hair return to its normal fullness by their baby’s first birthday.
