From the humid lake-effect summers to the dry, indoor heat of our long winters, curly-haired regulars at my salon often ask the same question: \*“How can I make my curls look consistent?”\* I’m Michelle Doyle, and I’ve spent years helping Rochester women embrace their natural texture. Curly hair is beautiful, unique, and versatile, but it does require a specific roadmap to look its best. Whether you have loose waves or tight coils, here is my expert guide to mastering your mane. ## It All Starts with Hydration Curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair because the scalp’s natural oils have a harder time traveling down the coiled hair shaft. This is why the foundation of every great curl day is **moisture.** When you’re in my chair, I always emphasize that hydration starts in the shower. I recommend using sulfate-free cleansers that won’t strip your hair of those precious oils. If you feel like your curls are losing their bounce during a dry Rochester January, consider a deep conditioning treatment once a week. Keeping the cuticle hydrated is the number one way to prevent the dreaded "frizz cloud." ## The “Squish to Condish” Technique One of my favorite professional tips to share with clients is the "Squish to Condish" method. Instead of rinsing all your conditioner out, try this: 1\. Apply conditioner to soaking-wet hair. 2. Flip your head upside down. 3. Cup your hands with water and scrunch (or squish) the hair upward toward the scalp. This pulses the water and conditioner into the hair fiber rather than just letting it sit on top. You’ll know you’ve done it right when your hair feels like seaweed, slippery, smooth, and fully saturated. ## Styling for Definition and Hold Once you step out of the shower, the clock is ticking. For the best definition, you should apply your styling products while your hair is still very wet. I generally recommend a two-step product approach: - **A Leave-in Cream:** To lock in moisture and provide softness. - **A Gel or Mousse:** To provide a "cast" that holds the curl shape as it dries. **Michelle’s Pro Tip:** Avoid the temptation to use a traditional terry-cloth towel. These rough up the hair cuticle and cause instant frizz. Instead, use a microfiber towel or even an old cotton T-shirt to gently blot out excess moisture. ## To Diffuse or Air Dry? In an ideal world, we’d all have time to air dry. But let’s be honest, between school drop-offs and mornings at Highland Park, who has four hours to wait for their hair to dry? A diffuser is a curly girl’s best friend. When using a blow dryer, attach the diffuser and use the low-heat, low-airflow setting. Cup the curls into the diffuser and hold them near the scalp without moving the dryer around too much. Once your hair is about 90% dry, stop and let the rest air dry to prevent over-drying the ends. ## Protecting Your Curls Overnight Nothing is more frustrating than having a perfect hair day only to wake up with flattened curls the next morning. To preserve your hard work, I recommend the "Pineapple" method. Gather your hair loosely at the very top of your head with a silk or satin scrunchie. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase also reduces friction, ensuring you wake up ready to go with minimal refreshing needed. ## Visit Me in Rochester Learning to love your curls is a journey, and having the right cut is half the battle.
